University of Roehampton

Course Introduction

This degree in Drama and English will offer a rich and diverse programme, which combines practical and creative project-based work with more conventional modules based on critical and historical analysis. This degree enables students to gain practical performance and problem-solving skills, to develop their creative and academic writing practice, and to hone their critical, theoretical and research abilities.

BA Drama and English has a range of modules, from 'Encountering Theatre (which includes a range of theatre trips); Performance and History, and a Production Project. These drama modules complement the English Literature modules, Discovering Literature, London in Literature (which includes a walking tour of the city), and Deconstructing the Canon. In year 2, the module Drama and English - Themes/Moments/Authors – will be at the heart of the programme, providing an overview of key overlapping areas – and theoretical concepts – in these disciplines.

In year 3, research-led and independent study options range across a variety of creative and critical practices and a the module 'Adaptation: Literature into Performance' will offer a further comparative core. Alongside this the programme will offer an interweaving of possibilities for third-year study including Playwriting alongside the cross- 'Writing, Performance & Art' and 'Contemporary Literature' beside 'Contemporary Issues in Performance'.
