Course Introduction

**Why study this course?**

Our Biochemistry (including foundation year) BSc (Hons) degree is a four-year course, designed to help you enter higher education if you don’t hold traditional qualifications or can’t meet the requirements for the standard three-year undergraduate degree.

The degree has a built-in foundation year (Year 0) to help you improve your study and transferable skills, so that you’ll be confident and well prepared to study at undergraduate level. On graduation from this four-year course you’ll receive the same title and award as students on the standard three-year biochemistry course.

**More about this course**

On our Biochemistry (including foundation year) BSc (Hons) course you’ll develop theoretical and practical skills, allowing you to analyse and understand biochemical information and data. This will also raise your awareness of the social and ethical dimensions in which contemporary biochemistry operates.

Your foundation year will focus on equipping you with essential study skills and fundamental scientific knowledge, so that you can gain the confidence and improve skills that will help you succeed at undergraduate level. This preparatory year will introduce you to basic mathematical concepts and laboratory techniques related to life sciences. Some of this teaching will take place in our state-of-the-art Science Centre, which is one of the biggest and most teaching lab of its kind in Europe.

The foundation year will be shared with students from other disciplines allowing you to exchange ideas and gain new perspectives on different areas of human sciences.

The subsequent three years of your study will provide a more in-depth examination of biochemistry. You’ll study the same course content and have the same choice of modules as students of the Biochemistry BSc (Hons) course.

Should you find yourself wishing to change your specialism following the foundation year there will be flexibility to allow you to do this.
