Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance

Course Introduction

The MA Creative Practice is a one year (full time) or two year (part time) taught programme, culminating in an independent research project.

Delivered in conjunction with our partner organisations: Siobhan Davies Dance and Independent Dance, the Dance Professional Practice enables experienced practitioners to develop their artistic practice in a stimulating environment of intellectual and creative inquiry. We support mid-career artists to: reflect on their body of professional experience and its role in their ongoing learning; engage in intensive studio-based experiences with significant artists and a skilled peer group; deepen their own practice as performers/makers; develop their understanding of a range of research methodologies within the arts; and pursue their own area of artistic interest.

Course Details

For MA students, the year culminates in an independent research project, allowing you to reflect on dance practice in its many forms, and the social, cultural, aesthetic and political contexts in which performance practice is located.

Teaching

Depending on the modules you select, learning will take place in a variety of different contexts including taught sessions or lectures, workshops, seminars, in studio tutorials, and individual study and research. Some studio based modules encourage reflection and peer review through sharing of practice. Teaching embraces different learning styles, allowing for a flexibility of response to your needs and abilities. The introduction of visiting lecturers and artists allows you to encounter a variety of views and approaches 3 from current fields of practice.

The MA Creative Practice assumes 1800 notional learning and teaching hours with average contact time of approximately 55 hours per module (naturally this will vary depending on your selected modules, please refer to individual module specifications to determine precise number of hours per module).
