Course Introduction

This doctorate offers a fully integrated practice-based, theoretically innovative, research-rich learning path, exemplified by our focus on evidence-based practice. The programme is delivered by an outstanding team of in-house practitioners with cutting-edge theoretical and research knowledge and excellent links with services in the region. We are the world's leading integrated department of applied psychology, focusing on the implementation of ground-breaking research to improve development, education, and mental and physical wellbeing in individuals and social groups. We use a broad range of scientific approaches to advance understanding and practice across these domains. The department has an exceptional track record of influencing policy in the delivery of health, education, and social care. Our mission is to equip students to seize both current and future opportunities through training as applied educational and child psychologists able to practise innovatively, accountably and reflectively within local authority services and other rewarding settings. The provision of children?s services and the role and training of educational psychologists is currently experiencing a period of change, questioning established practices and moving towards increasingly accountable, evidence-based, inclusive approaches to meeting children?s and families' needs. Many graduates of our specialist doctorates go on to become professional practitioners either in the NHS, local councils, charities, in private practice or other settings.
