Course Introduction

This Masters in cyber security will suit you if you have a background in ICT and want to develop the practical skills and techniques to solve cyber security problems. You will gain a real-world understanding of the key issues relating to the design, analysis and implementation of modern IT systems. Your studies will also familiarise you with commercial and open-source cyber security equipment, software and services. In addition, you will discover how cyber security systems are designed and constructed, and the impact this technology has on organisations. Besides learning about current systems and their supporting technologies, you will also appreciate why the management and delivery of content and services to users is so important.

Extended Masters - If you have completed an undergraduate degree and not met the entry criteria for this course, you may qualify for our Extended MSc Cyber Security option. This includes two additional modules before you progress onto the core Masters degree. You must study for your Extended Masters full-time. English language support is available, if required.

Internship - You can also choose to take this course with a six-month internship. This will allow you to gain experience, enhance your existing skills and acquire new ones in a professional work environment. It will also give you an idea of the range of security roles in which you could pursue a career.

Graduates in cyber security have a good record of gaining employment and progressing in their professional work. Once you successfully complete this course you will be able to pursue a number of opportunities, including those in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry and in organisations that are data and knowledge intensive. With your Masters in cyber security you could go on to work as a: network or computer security technician; computer or network security officer; penetration tester; threat and incident response analyst; data privacy officer; network forensics analyst; data protection advisor; security operations analyst; cloud security architect; business continuity manager; cryptographer/cryptologist; security software developeretc. You may want to further your knowledge in a specific area through doctoral study.

Qualifications required:

  • Domestic entry requirements: To study the Extended Masters programme students will need: a Bachelor's degree
  • International entry requirements: Students need to have an IELTS score of 6.5 or above and a minimum of 5.5 for each of the 4 individual components (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening).
