Course Introduction

MA Applied Social Policy and Practice programme provides students with social research methods, skills and techniques that are widely sought after in government, non-government and private sectors. The applied, inter-disciplinary nature of this course enables students to develop social research skills and specialist study in related areas of policy interest (for example education, health, housing, and immigration). Whether you're a recent graduate; working in service delivery programmes and want to move into a policy role, or looking to change careers by moving into policy and social research ? this programme will give you the research and analytical skills you need.

Assessment is via: coursework; class presentations; and dissertation project. Some of the options open to graduates of this degree include: Social research; Policy analysis and planning; Careers in social and community services; Human services; Climate change and development; Social market research; Teaching in the field of social science; Activism and advocacy. These may be within community-based organisations, trade unions, local government, marketing and social research organisations, private consultancies or government policy agencies.

Qualifications required:

  • Domestic entry requirements: Students need an undergraduate degree classification of 2.1 or above in a relevant discipline or a professional qualification recognised as being equivalent to a good honours degree in a related area, for example, PG Cert/PG Dip in Education, Social Work, Social Care, Health Management, Local Government Studies, Social and Public Administration or a minimum of 5 years professional experience, and/or research in a professional capacity with Recognition for Prior Learning (RPL) Level 7 vocational qualifications in a relevant field.
  • International entry requirements: Students educated in a language other than English should have an IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent.
  • IELTS score: 6.5
