Course Introduction

The MSc in Finance and Econometrics is a specialist degree aimed at providing you with rigorous training and a strong analytical background in finance, financial economics and econometrics. This masters degree is ideal for those who aim to pursue careers as financial economists, quantitative analysts and financial econometricians in the private sector, in the government or in international financial institutions.

Unique features of the MSc in Finance and Econometrics are: This degree covers all the analytical tools and advanced materials in quantitative asset pricing, econometrics, financial derivatives, and financial econometrics; Training in relevant mathematical and statistical methods and how to conduct, assess, and supervise both theoretical and applied research in the field; Possibility to continue to MRes study upon successful completion of the MSc, with the option to progress to doctoral study in the School of Economics and Finance. The Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI) has recognised the School of Economics and Finance as a Centre for Excellence in Financial Services, and we are associated with a number of professional bodies; to include the Chartered Financial Analyst UK (CFA), the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI), and the Chartered Banker Institute (CBI). The School also has a partnership with Frontier Economics - Europe?s leading economic consultancy.

Teaching is by a mixture of formal lectures and small group seminars. The seminars are designed to generate informed discussion around set topics, and may involve student presentations, group exercise as well as open discussion. We take pride in the close and friendly working relationship we have with our students. You are assigned an Academic Adviser who will guide you in both academic and pastoral matters throughout your time at Queen Mary. The grade for each module is assessed through coursework. The direction of your individual study will be guided by the formal study sessions you attend, along with your reading lists and assignments. However, we expect you to demonstrate an active role in your own learning by reading widely and expanding your own knowledge, understanding and critical ability. Independent study will foster in you the ability to identify your own learning needs and determine which areas you need to focus on to become proficient in your subject area. This is an important transferable skill and will help to prepare you for the transition to working life. Qualifications required:

  • Domestic entry requirements: Students need to have an undergraduate degree with minimum 2:1 or overseas equivalent. A good performance in a higher degree such as a Masters will also be accepted. Any degree discipline is acceptable, but students must have an excellent existing level of mathematics and statistics. Usually, our students come from a Mathematics, Statistics, Sciences, Engineering, Economics and Finance disciplines. Weight will be given to relevant work experience and professional qualifications but neither is necessary to be accepted onto this course.
  • International entry requirements: Students whose first degree is not taught in an English-speaking country must provide evidence of English language proficiency 6.5 IELTS overall and 6.0 in Writing or equivalent is the minimum required.
