Course Introduction

The programme offers PE teachers, and sports professional the opportunity to be at the forefront of leading innovative research-informed professional practice. The MA in Education: Pedagogy and Professional Practice in Physical Education is aimed at Physical Education teachers and Sports Professionals at any stage of their careers. It can be of great benefit to those in senior and middle leadership roles (and those aspiring to leadership positions) in the early years, primary, secondary and post-sixteen sectors, and in other educational establishments.

The programme will offer you the opportunity to be at the forefront of leading professional practice and enable you to make a positive difference to the quality of learning and teaching within your educational setting. Integral to this Master's programme is the opportunity to undertake a small-scale research enquiry into an aspect of practice as part of an intellectually challenging learning experience that relates theory to practice leading to the development of knowledge and skills relevant to practice and supporting career progression. A range of assessment types are used, including reflective journals, case studies, portfolios, research proposals, academic papers, oral presentations and a final dissertation.

The MA in Education: Pedagogy and Professional Practice in Physical Education is offered part-time or full-time as a taught programme at St Mary?s University or a blended programme, designed to meet the needs of practitioners in Physical Education and Sport. This course offers teachers the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and understanding of evidence-based educational practice, placing them at the cutting edge of pedagogical development thus supporting career progression. Students will also achieve PgDip and PgCert awards in this course.

Qualifications required:

  • Domestic entry requirements: Students are required to hold a good first degree (2.2 or above) and be working in an educational setting. Students must be in professional practice in order to undertake a small-scale practitioner research inquiry.
  • International entry requirements: Students whose first Language is not English, they need to have an IELTS score of 6.0 overall with no less than 5.5 in any section (or equivalent).
