Course Introduction

The UCL Eastman Dental Institute offers the possibility for suitable candidates to carry out a Clinical Experience MPhil/PhD research programme (four-year full-time only). All new students are registered through the newly created UCL Eastman Dental Institute Centre for Postgraduate Research (UCL ECPgR) at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute. UCL Eastman Dental Institute is a world-leading, academic centre for postgraduate dentistry and translational research based in central London. The institute offers an extensive range of high-quality study opportunities including Master's degrees, speciality training, certificates, diplomas, research-informed degrees and CPD courses. It is also a world-class research centre offering a range of doctorates. The clinically intensive programmes are led by international specialists and the UCL Eastman Dental Institute enjoys many long-standing collaborations with international universities, the NHS, industry sponsors and other UCL research groups. Many graduates become leading clinical specialists, consultants, senior lecturers and post-doctoral researchers.

This is a full-time, four-year programme which offers the opportunity to work on a science or clinically relevant project under the guidance of a supervisor. However, students will be linked with a clinical unit depending on their trained specialisation. Students will be offered the chance to sustain limited clinical activity during the programme depending on the demands of the hosting division in order to maintain her/his clinical expertise. UCL Eastman Institute seeks to improve and make a positive impact upon oral and systemic health through innovative and high-quality research. Recent graduates have either continued on an academic career pathway by obtaining research or academic positions at leading universities, or have entered managerial or research positions in the health service, government or industry. Some graduates have secured prestigious specialist training posts.

Qualifications required:

  • Domestic entry requirements: Students need to have a minimum of an upper second-class UK Bachelor?s degree in an appropriate subject, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard, or a recognised MRes or Master?s degree. Applicants are also expected to satisfy UCLH NHS Foundation Trust requirements for engagement in clinical practice.
  • International entry requirements: Students need to have: IELTS overall grade of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each of the subtests; overall score of 100 with 24/30 in reading and writing and 20/30 in speaking and listening in Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) iBT; overall score of 185 with 176 in all subtests in Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English; overall score of 185 with 176 in all subtests in Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English; pass at Mastery level when achieved with a pass at Mastery level in the Pitman International Spoken test (ISESOL) in City & Guilds (Pitman Examination in International ESOL); 69 overall, with a minimum of 59 in each Communicative Skill in Pearson Test of English (Academic); successful completion of ISE III with a ?merit? in all components; overall mark of 70%, with at least 65% in each of the four subtests in UCL Diploma in English for Academic Purposes; overall mark of 70% with at least 65% in each of the four elements of the examination in UCL International Pre-Master's Courses; mark of 70%, with at least 65% in each of the subtests in UCL Pre-sessional English Courses.
