Course Introduction

The MA in Creative Writing degree is designed for ambitious, committed writers who want to hone and develop their writing practice and develop their creative, critical and professional writing skills in preparation for careers in the creative industries. Roehampton was one of the first universities in London to offer an MA in Creative Writing when it was launched in 2005 and it remains dedicated to providing an innovative, unique curriculum, taught by world-leading academic staff and internationally renowned writers. On this programme you will discover how to make your writing more effective, break bad habits and learn how to assess your work professionally. You will graduate with the skills required for professional practice in the creative writing industries and with an understanding of the necessary marketing skills. You will be encouraged to make the most of Roehampton?s connections with the literary world through events such as networking evenings where you can make professional contacts with invited publishers and agents. Careers such as journalism, copywriting and arts management are possible on completion of this course. Students can also exit with PGDip award.

Qualifications required:

  • Domestic entry requirements: Students need to have a good second-class honours degree is normally required as well as a portfolio of writing, consisting of approximately 2000 words of prose (Fiction, Creative Nonfiction, Journalism) or 15 pages of poetry. If a candidate demonstrates sufficient skill and professional experience in writing, the previous degree requirement may be waived.
  • International entry requirements: Students need to have: IELTS score of 6.5 overall with no less than 5.5 in any band; TOEFL Internet Based Test: Overall: 89, Reading: 18, Writing: 17, Listening: 17, Speaking: 20; Pearson Test of English: 59 overall with no less than 51 in any band; Cambridge Proficiency Certificate: Overall : 176, Listening : 162, Reading : 162, Speaking : 162, Writing : 162; Cambridge Advanced Certificate: Overall : 169, Listening : 162, Reading : 162, Speaking : 162, Writing : 162.
