Course Introduction

In this course you will undertake independent and extended research and practice in a specialised area of Creative Writing and over the course of the programme you will secure the skills and knowledge required for a career in professional publishing, the creative industries, or to continue in academia. You will be taught how to write fiction of the highest professional calibre by examining two primary forms, the short story and the novel, building a portfolio of fiction. The emphasis is on craft, technique and practical guidance, and you will engage with a variety of storytelling tools and models. You will be introduced to a wide range of approaches in short and long form fiction enabling you to develop your writing practice as well as thinking about your own social and cultural experiences and identities.

Qualifications required:

  • Domestic entry requirements: Students need to have a good second-class honours degree is normally required as well as a portfolio of writing, consisting of approximately 2000 words of prose (Fiction, Creative Nonfiction, Journalism) or 15 pages of poetry. If a candidate demonstrates sufficient skill and professional experience in writing, the previous degree requirement may be waived.
  • International entry requirements: Students need to have: IELTS score of 6.5 overall with no less than 5.5 in any band; TOEFL Internet Based Test: Overall: 89, Reading: 18, Writing: 17, Listening: 17, Speaking: 20; Pearson Test of English: 59 overall with no less than 51 in any band; Cambridge Proficiency Certificate: Overall : 176, Listening : 162, Reading : 162, Speaking : 162, Writing : 162; Cambridge Advanced Certificate: Overall : 169, Listening : 162, Reading : 162, Speaking : 162, Writing : 162.
