Course Introduction

An MPhil at UCL Institute of Cardiovascular Science (ICS) provides you with the opportunity to consider cardiovascular disease from the bench to the bedside. This programme will widen your horizons and bring you in contact with cardiovascular scientists with links to engineering, nanotechnology, chemistry and genetics, creating opportunities in research, pharma or aligned fields. Our research is broad, spanning discovery-based laboratory science, clinical translation and experimental medicine, as well as healthcare evaluation, implementation and policy. Cardiovascular research at ICS focuses on a range of areas, including device development, cardiomyopathies and arrhythmias, ischaemic preconditioning, imaging and regenerative therapy. We also have researchers working in cardiovascular genetics, epidemiology and preventative medicine.

Research areas: Arrhythmias, Cardiac development, Cardiomyopathies, Cerebrovascular disease, Congenital heart disease, Epidemiology, Genetics, Imaging, Ischaemic heart disease, Metabolism (diabetes and obesity), Prevention, Regenerative therapy, Surgery, Vascular biology and physiology. Recent graduates have taken up clinical, academic, and postdoctoral positions in the public and private sectors, nationally and internationally.

Qualifications required:

  • Domestic entry requirements: Students need to have a minimum of an upper second-class UK Bachelor?s degree in an appropriate subject or a medical degree, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard, or a recognised taught Master?s degree.
  • International entry requirements: Students need to have: IELTS overall grade of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each of the subtests; overall score of 92 with 24/30 in reading and writing and 20/30 in speaking and listening in Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) iBT; overall score of 176 with 169 in all subtests in Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English; overall score of 176 with 169 in all subtests in Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English; pass at Mastery level when achieved with a pass at Mastery level in the Pitman International Spoken test (ISESOL) in City & Guilds (Pitman Examination in International ESOL); 62 overall, with a minimum of 59 in each Communicative Skill in Pearson Test of English (Academic); successful completion of ISE III with a ?pass? in all components; overall mark of 65%, with at least 60% in each of the four subtests in UCL Diploma in English for Academic Purposes; overall mark of 65% with at least 60% in each of the four elements of the examination in UCL International Pre-Master's Courses; mark of 65%, with at least 60% in each of the subtests in UCL Pre-sessional English Courses.
