Course Introduction

This course is designed primarily for existing healthcare practitioners and covers non-invasive methods in cardiopulmonary exercise testing to accurately assess the performance of the heart and lungs of patients at rest and during exercise. A distinctive and integral feature of the MSc is the focus on both in-depth practical experience and comprehensive, up-to-date knowledge. Students will study key concepts in leadership and management, as well as legal and ethical issues related to biomedical research and clinical practice. You will also gain a solid grounding in research methodologies required for biomedical research. Our industry-experienced tutors place an emphasis on work-based experience and candidates are normally required to work in a cardiology non-invasive department. Combine advanced theoretical study with practical training, developing the holistic skills required to further your career in cardiopulmonary exercise testing and cardiac rehabilitation. Throughout your studies you will develop your skills in state-of-the-art laboratories, including a clinical skills laboratory, all fitted out with professional standard equipment.

A wide range of teaching and learning approaches are used to build up your skills and knowledge ? mainly through lectures, seminars and laboratory and practical sessions. You will take part in case study-based discussions, practical sessions, and in-class activities. You will supplement all this with your own guided and independent reading. The mix of delivery modes will be varied and suitable to the content being delivered. This course will equip you with the skills and knowledge to work in a range of roles including specialised cardiac physiologist, healthcare practitioners, or within other healthcare professional services in the NHS or aboard. If you are currently working in the field of cardiopulmonary exercise testing, you will be well placed to advance your career. You might also wish to explore your options in a research or academic career, or even complete further study at doctoral level. Students can also exit with PGCert and PGDip awards.
