Description

Bioinformatics is the application of computational methods in the representation and analysis of biological data. The availability of data from genome sequencing and high-throughput measurements in the human and other biological species has fuelled an explosive growth of bioinformatics during the past two decades. Research in bioinformatics has the potential to steer biological discovery in genomics, medical science and pharmaceutical applications.

The research scope of the Algorithms and Data Analysis (ADA) group ranges from theoretical computational-complexity issues, through design and analysis of algorithms and data structures for generic computational problems, to developing machine learning algorithms that are able to apply but also acquire new knowledge, adapt to environment, and process new inputs. Particular emphasis is placed on developing algorithmic solutions and concrete implementations for various applications, focusing on applications engaging with verticals such as health, security, and finance.

Research is supported by extensive collaborations across medical and biomedical departments within King's as well as other national and international research groups in computational and experimental sciences.

Course Study Environment

We are a department with many internationally recognised researchers and visiting academics, large groups of PhD students, research assistants, national and international projects, collaborations with other departments as well as links with industry. We offer an exciting environment and excellent opportunities for research.

Our PhD students have access to good library facilities, designated PhD offices within the Department where PhD students can dock an assigned laptop for use throughout their studies, Regular group seminars are organised providing PhD students chance to showcase their research and receive feedback from academic staff and peers, and college-based training in transferable and research skills.

The Department is located on the Strand Campus, in the heart of central London, close to the cultural activities of the West End and the South Bank, to the major departments of state at Whitehall, and to the leading financial institutions of the City, and within easy reach of major transport links. Our facilities are within easy reach of the British Computer Society and the Institute of Engineering & Technology (and the IET Library), with access to a formidable collection of scientific journals and other technical material.

The Department moved to the historic Bush House in the summer of 2017, featuring state-of-the-art teaching and office spaces. Although the Department is fairly large in size, there is a friendly and inclusive culture, with regular social and celebratory events to bring staff and students together. Our staff and students come from all over the world, which provides a rich environment for teaching and research.

Qualifications required:

  • Domestic entry requirements: Bachelor of Science degree with 2:1 honours in Computer Science or a closely related subject, and a good background in the area of intended research. Applicants who do not meet the undergraduate requirements but have or are currently studying an additional Master's Degree with Merit in Computer Science or relevant subject may be considered.
  • International entry requirements: Students can demonstrate their English Language Proficiency with any of the following tests and grades: IELTS (Academic): 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each skill; TOEFL IBT: 80 overall, with a minimum 20 in each skill; Cambridge Advanced Certificate (CAE): 169 overall with a minimum of 160 in each skill; Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): 169 overall with a minimum of 160 in each skill; Pearson Test of English (Academic): 59 overall, with a minimum of 54 in each skill. The tests listed above are valid if they have been taken within the past two years.
