Course Introduction

This Banking and Finance course is for those who wish to progress into public and private sectors in the areas of investment banking, corporate banking, financial regulation, investment management, equity, foreign markets, corporate treasury management, derivatives and risk management. Our graduates have gone on to work in a wide range of roles at companies including Barclays, RBS and the Bank of England. Featuring the advanced learning you need to embark on a stimulating career in the financial sector, this course has an emphasis on relevant and prominent issues for the sector such as financial regulation, risk management, international systems, banking institutions and securities markets. We value skills training as highly as we value theory, so you can also expect to learn the practical ways in which you can use this knowledge within your profession, including training in a range of financial software systems. Many of our academics are involved in pioneering research in areas such as portfolio management, corporate finance and ethics in finance, and have been practitioners with organisations such as Standard and Poors and The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. They have the knowledge and expertise to ensure you emerge from the course with a thorough understanding of domestic and international banking, together with a practical knowledge of key quantitative concepts. Students can also exit with PGCert and PGDip awards.

Qualifications required:

  • Domestic entry requirements: Students need to have a second-class honours degree 2:2 or above in the field of finance or banking, economics, accountancy or business studies. First degree must include an applied quantitative element of statistics, mathematics, engineering, physics, computing or science or the equivalent of the above from recognised overseas university. Students with relevant qualifications or work experience, academic credit may be considered. We also normally require Grade C GCSE or an equivalent qualification.
  • International entry requirements: Students need to have: an IELTS score of 6.5 (with minimum 6.0 in all components); 58 (with 51 in all components) in Pearson Test of English; 87 (with at least 21 in listening & writing, 22 in speaking and 23 in reading) in TOEFL (IBT); 176 overall (no less than 169 in any component) in Cambridge First, Advanced, Proficiency - taken post January 2015.
