Course Introduction

This programme is uniquely structured to enable dental practitioners to enhance their knowledge and clinical skills in endodontics. Requiring a minimum commitment of one day a week for three calendar years, inclusive of attendance one day every fortnight, it is ideally suited for the busy dental practitioner keen on acquiring a postgraduate qualification in endodontics whilst continuing to work in practice. The programme provides an in-depth approach for exploring current concepts in clinical endodontics, offering deeper knowledge and understanding of the subject, improving clinical skills and increasing job satisfaction. There will be opportunities to access current endodontic concepts and research, exchange ideas and experience with other postgraduate students. This programme is jointly hosted by the Institute of Dentistry, Barts and The London School of Medicine & Dentistry, and the Dental Teaching Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust.

This MSc is also suitable if you wish to be considered a Dentist with Enhanced/Extended Skills, or Special Interests, in Endodontics. In addition, this MSc may be a stepping-stone to specialisation; further study, training and examinations after the MSc, fulfilling the requirements of the Curriculum for Specialist Training in Endodontics, will lead to entry into the General Dental Council (UK) Endodontic Specialist Register. This programme will: Provide an in-depth approach for exploring current concepts in clinical endodontics, offering deeper knowledge and understanding of the subject, improving clinical skills and leading to increased job satisfaction; Allow you to exchange ideas and experience with a wide range of fellow practitioners; Contribute to, and enhance, your career options, by allowing you access to current endodontic concepts and research; Form part of your Personal Development Plan.

A combination of assessment methods will be employed, including: Formative assessment: regular informal verbal feedback regarding performance and achievement of the learning objectives; Assessment of competency: a competency-based Practical Test at the end of the Laboratory Endodontic Skills module. A pass of this ?Gateway Test? is required before progressing to the Clinical Skills sessions, treating patients. Failure will necessitate additional laboratory practical sessions before re-taking the ?Gateway Test?; Summative assessment: assessment of each module by written papers, practical skills tests, essay questions, viva voce, clinical case reports, literature review reports and audit presentations.
