Course Introduction

This course covers a breadth of topics related to management, economics and finance of the built environment. The research areas: Management - such as innovation, leadership, organisations, culture, strategy related to projects. enterprises and the construction industry; Economics and finance - related to construction, real estate, property development, infrastructure, climate change, sustainability; Data analytics - such as big data, building information modelling, social networks, building services.

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) consists of a piece of supervised research, normally undertaken over a period of three years full-time. Assessment is by means of a thesis, which should demonstrate your capacity to pursue original research based upon a good understanding of the research techniques and concepts appropriate to the discipline. Initially, you will be registered for the MPhil degree. If you wish to proceed to a PhD, you will be required to pass an 'Upgrade' assessment. The purpose of the upgrade is to assess your progress and ability to complete your PhD programme to a good standard and in a reasonable time frame. It is expected that a full-time student will attempt upgrade within 18 months of registration. Graduated PhD students have secured jobs in both major and specialist consultancies as well as academic positions in leading universities, both in the UK and overseas. Others have gone on to establish successful careers in project management, as marketing associates, real estate developers and project engineers.

Qualifications required:

  • Domestic entry requirements: Applicants must have a minimum of an upper second-class UK Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard, in a relevant subject, is essential. Exceptionally: where applicants have other suitable research or professional experience, they may be admitted without a Master's degree; or where applicants have a lower second-class UK Honours Bachelor's degree (2:2) (or equivalent) they must possess a relevant Master's degree to be admitted. We expect any successful application to include a sufficiently strong and convincing proposal, and those holding a Master's degree are typically well prepared to provide one. Relevant work experience is highly desirable.
  • International entry requirements: Students need to have: IELTS overall grade of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each of the subtests; overall score of 92 with 24/30 in reading and writing and 20/30 in speaking and listening in Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) iBT; overall score of 176 with 169 in all subtests in Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English; overall score of 176 with 169 in all subtests in Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English; pass at Mastery level when achieved with a pass at Mastery level in the Pitman International Spoken test (ISESOL) in City & Guilds (Pitman Examination in International ESOL); 62 overall, with a minimum of 59 in each Communicative Skill in Pearson Test of English (Academic); successful completion of ISE III with a ?pass? in all components; overall mark of 65%, with at least 60% in each of the four subtests in UCL Diploma in English for Academic Purposes; overall mark of 65% with at least 60% in each of the four elements of the examination in UCL International Pre-Master's Courses; mark of 65%, with at least 60% in each of the subtests in UCL Pre-sessional English Courses.
