Course Introduction

Process engineering often involves close collaboration between engineers and scientists from a variety of disciplines. The Chemical Process Engineering MSc at UCL is specifically designed to facilitate this collaboration and provides graduates from a variety of engineering and science disciplines with the advanced training necessary to enter the chemical or biochemical industries. Students will develop knowledge of core chemical engineering principles and applications as well as teamworking and communication skills. Moreover, they will learn how to 1) be creative and innovative in solving problems and in designing processes, 2) use appropriate mathematical methods and scientific principles as a tool for solving complex problems, 3) analyse and interpret data and, when necessary, designing experiments to gain new data, and 4) retrieve, analyse and use information from a wide range of sources. The programme offers three routes with different compulsory and optional modules: Advanced Chemical Engineering Route (accredited by the IChemE at F-Standard); Design Route (accredited by the IChemE at B-Standard); Research Route.

The programme is suitable for graduates in disciplines such as chemical engineering, material science and chemistry and its allied fields. The multidisciplinary nature of the programme coupled with extensive industrial input and the emphasis on safety and environmental issues has attracted outstanding students from many countries across the globe. Upon completion, our graduates can expect to play a major role in developing the technologies that make available most of the things that we use in everyday life and provide the expertise and technology to enhance our health and standard of living. These activities may involve the development of new materials, food processing, water treatment, pharmaceuticals, transport and energy resources as well as being at the frontline, addressing present environmental issues such as climate change.

Qualifications required:

  • Domestic entry requirements: Students need to have a minimum of an upper second-class Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or a cognate discipline (such as Mechanical or Environmental Engineering, Chemistry and Physics) from a UK university or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard.
  • International entry requirements: Students need to have: IELTS overall grade of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each of the subtests; overall score of 92 with 24/30 in reading and writing and 20/30 in speaking and listening in Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) iBT; overall score of 176 with 169 in all subtests in Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English; overall score of 176 with 169 in all subtests in Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English; pass at Mastery level when achieved with a pass at Mastery level in the Pitman International Spoken test (ISESOL) in City & Guilds (Pitman Examination in International ESOL); 62 overall, with a minimum of 59 in each Communicative Skill in Pearson Test of English (Academic); successful completion of ISE III with a ?pass? in all components; overall mark of 65%, with at least 60% in each of the four subtests in UCL Diploma in English for Academic Purposes; overall mark of 65% with at least 60% in each of the four elements of the examination in UCL International Pre-Master's Courses; mark of 65%, with at least 60% in each of the subtests in UCL Pre-sessional English Courses.
