Course Introduction

This newly launched Masters programme will allow you to develop your knowledge and understanding of advance Immunological concepts. In particular, the course will focus on developing the understanding of how immune system disorders arise and how immunological reagents may be used as therapeutics (immunotherapeutic). You will also be trained to perform a range of immunoassays and will come to understand how these may be used in the diagnosis of disease. This programme structure in the area of Biomedical Science and Medical Immunology will provide you with the necessary framework and vocabulary in essential and advanced aspects of Immunology. Additionally you will gain the expertise in a range of analytical and technical skills that will equip you to pursue a range of career options. These may include employment within the health service, pharmaceutical industry and education, or, to proceed to further scientific training or research.

As part of this programme you will also carry out a research project with a focus on Immunology supervised by research-active experts in the area. This course is designed for those students who have previously studied a related subject in Biomedical Science at university level or who have a basic knowledge of Immunology and are looking to develop an advanced mastery of the subject. Your knowledge and understanding is assessed by both summative and formative assessments, which include seminar presentations, written assignments, laboratory reports, and seen practical and theory examinations. A master?s degree is an important means for health care professionals to develop the skills necessary to progress from specialist practitioner (BMS Band 6) to higher specialist practitioner (currently BMS Band 7). A qualification at Master?s level is increasingly becoming a requirement for progression via a PhD into a research career. Possession of the MSc degree is likely to enhance your marketability in academic research, pharmaceutical research and development and Education. This programme is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Scientists (IBMS) which is the leading professional body for Biomedical Scientists. Students can also exit with PGCert and PGDip awards.

Qualifications required:

  • Domestic entry requirements: Students need to have a second class honours degree 2:2 or above, or equivalent qualification in an appropriate subject. Students with relevant qualifications or work experience, academic credit may be considered. We also normally require Grade C GCSE or an equivalent qualification.
  • International entry requirements: Students need to have: an IELTS score of 6.5 (with minimum 6.0 in all components); 58 (with 51 in all components) in Pearson Test of English; 87 (with at least 21 in listening & writing, 22 in speaking and 23 in reading) in TOEFL (IBT); 176 overall (no less than 169 in any component) in Cambridge First, Advanced, Proficiency - taken post January 2015.
