Both biomedical engineering courses at Brunel draw on the wide experience of our academic staff, ranging from the development of equipment and experiments for testing devices to research carried out in collaboration with hospitals, biomedical companies and research institutions. There are four compulsory taught modules which are common to both of the courses. You’ll then choose from a range of optional modules, depending on your particular interests and the course you decide to follow. A major dissertation is compulsory for all students.
The course offers a yearly competition for the best dissertation ' The Anson Prize ' which attracts £500 for the winner and £250 for the runner'up.
You’ll be taught through lectures, seminars, workshops, lab sessions, and guest lectures from industry; all world experts in their field.
You’ll be assessed on your written assignments, presentations, examinations and the dissertation project.
Our graduates have acquired skills that are essential to the modern biomedical and healthcare industry. You’ll also have the expertise required to enter into management, product innovation, development and research. Some of our graduates have taken on roles such as R&D engineer, biomedical specialist in intensive care monitoring and ventilation, product safety associate and engineer laboratory technician.
Modules include: biomechanics and biomaterials; design and manufacture; biomedical engineering principles; innovation, management and research methods; dissertation. Optional modules include: genomic technologies; molecular mechanisms of human disease; tissue engineering.

- A UK 1st or 2nd Class Honours degree or equivalent internationally recognised qualification in an engineering; appropriate science or technology discipline. Other qualifications and relevant experience will be assessed on an individual basis. English language requirement: IELTS: 6 (min 5.5 in all areas); Pearson: 51 (51 in all subscores); BrunELT: 60% (min 55% in all areas).
