Education is something that happens at all stages of life, not just in childhood. It allows us to develop our thoughts and ideas, progress in our careers and learn more about the world in which we live.
Whether your interest lies in working with children with special educational needs, working in a museum as an educator, youth work, leading professional development in a private organisation our Education Studies degree is a vocational programme that will prepare you for a career in these areas, and many more. In addition, the programme is tailored to prepare you for post graduate teachers' education at University or at school, and further study and specialisation in special education needs, education policy, and education practice.
In your first year with us you will gain a broad and balanced knowledge of the principal features of education and an appreciation of the debates within of educational theory, policy and practice. In addition, the first year has a practical focus, which will equip you with the academic and professional knowledge and skills to do well at university and in your chosen career.
For your second and third year you can choose to follow one of the three pathways below, or choose modules from each, giving you a diverse knowledge of education:
Working in Education. This route will prepare you for graduate employment in schools and other educational settings;
Diversity and Inclusion in Education. This will prepare you for graduate professional work not only with the diversity of students that attend mainstream schools but also more a specialist unit and/or central, local or private organisation;
Researching Education. This pathway will not only prepare you for further training and academic study but also provides you with the skills to investigate issues and concerns as a professional employed in a variety of organisations (such as, schools, higher education colleges, and charities in the voluntary or public sector).
In your second year you will also undertake a professional work placement, to give you valuable experience in the workplace, and an opportunity to put the theory which you have learnt at Roehampton into practice. It will also allow you to develop connections and networks in the profession, which will be beneficial to you when you are looking for full time employment after graduation. In addition, you can also choose to study abroad at one of our partner universities for a semester. This will develop your cross-cultural skills and confidence, and give you the opportunity to learn about education in another culture.
During your first year, you will complete a number of modules which will give you an overview of education and will cover the topics that each of the three pathways that make up this degree will explore in more detail as you progress. You will study a range of current issues and debates in early childhood and education, and investigate the notion of research, with a particular focus on social and cultural issues.
You will examine the basic concepts of developmental social and cognitive psychology from infancy to adolescence, and begin to understand how these concepts inform teaching and learning.You will also learn about some of the most significant developments that have occurred in education in the 20th and more recently in the 21st Century.
In your first year, we also help you to become a self-sufficient and confident student who is able to complete your studies efficiently and effectively. To facilitate this, we have created both a study skills module and a professional practice module to enable you not only to study effectively and achieve, but also to develop the emotional intelligence, interpersonal skills, and the level of personal reflection needed to become a successful professional within organisations such as schools, higher education, education publishing and other institutions.
During your second and third years you will build on the knowledge gained in the first year modules. In your third year you will complete a dissertation on a subject that you have become interested in researching further with the individual support from a personal research tutor.

The Working in Education pathway you will not only prepare you a career in schools but also learning beyond the classroom, by gaining a wider understanding of learning outside of the compulsory education sector. This includes the teaching and learning that takes place in museums, galleries, youth projects, voluntary organisations, professional development and higher education. You will also have the opportunity to explore and examine how educationalists may improve their pupils’ well-being and learning by gaining a better understanding of how social influences, and in particular early experiences, emotions and emotional literacy, may facilitate learning.
If you choose to follow the Diversity and Inclusion in Education pathway, you will investigate ethical dilemmas, rights and responsibilities in education, diversity and multiculturalism, youth participation and identity and examine the learning needs and inclusion of children with a range of special educational needs.
The Researching Education pathway will enable you to investigate issues in education, such as exclusion from school, or selective education and by doing so cover ethical dilemmas, rights and responsibilities in education. This pathway will develop the capacity for logical reasoning, writing and methods of investigation that are of practical use to you not only in education institutions but also other organisations that need to address and resolve every-day challenges.
