University of Westminster

Course Introduction

This course was launched in response to an industry need for appropriately skilled graduates; it was developed with extensive input from the fashion and retail industries, and continues to meet the needs of the sector. We develop graduates with strong commercial and communication skills, and an excellent understanding of the sector, who are real team players. The focus is on analytical ability, and merchandising is a great career for commercially minded students with a passion for fashion.

Course Modules

In your first year you will study core modules providing an introduction to the fashion merchandise industry, and to the role of fashion buyers and merchandisers, as well as fashion marketing; there is also an option module on London fashion, and an elective language module. In your second year, alongside modules on business experience and preparing for the world of work in advance of your business placement year, there are also core modules on planning and trading for merchandisers, fashion trends, and textile and product development, as well as option modules in visual merchandising, fashion promotion and global retailing. The main focus in your last year is your final major project, but you will also be able to choose from option modules including trends and change in retail, branding, luxury fashion management, consumer behaviour, entrepreneurship, commercial skills, global sourcing, and sustainability.
