There is an ever'growing demand in professional theatre for practitioners who have the versatility to combine top'level skills in acting with professional musicianship. This degree will enable you to develop industry'level skills as an actor alongside the ability to compose, musically'direct and play the music for the productions in which you appear.
Throughout your course you will have access to flexible industry'standard performance spaces with lighting and sound equipment, a dance studio, rehearsal rooms and other external facilities: including professional theatre venues.
During the level 4 and 5 your training, you will study the work of a variety of European acting practitioners including:
• Konstantin Stanislavski
• Sanford Meisner
• Uta Hagen
• Katie Mitchell.
This work will be complimented by a fundamental musical training which will include classes in:
• general musicianship
• individual instrumental work
• acting through song
• ensemble music'making.
As the course moves into level 5 the focus in the acting modules will be on further and extended modes of performance – such as Epic Theatre, Restoration Comedy, Greek Chorus and Shakespeare. Your musical development will include the exploration of skills in musical direction, composition and the integration of acting and instrumental playing. You will also undertake classes to further develop your singing voice.
In level 6 you will get the opportunity to promote your work to leading industry professionals in:
• mock auditions
• two major theatre productions
• the West End agents’ showcase.
You will also be able to explore the skills required to make theatre for young audiences.
During the course you will have the opportunity to act in, and create the music for, two full'length productions. There will also be an agents’ showcase for industry professionals in the West End. In all these projects, and throughout the entire course, you will be taught by leading practitioners – many of whom still work actively within the profession.
The department has a full range of musical instruments that you are able to borrow whilst you are learning a new instrument.
Some of the most popular careers for graduates include acting for theatre and theatre for young audiences. You may wish to undertake postgraduate study in your subject or even explore something new.
