London: political, legal and media capital

Throughout its history, London has been at the centre of politics, the legal system and is home to one of the largest concentrations of media outlets in the world. Study in London to undertake placements and projects with some of the world's most respected organisations.

Five of the world’s six largest law firms are headquartered in London. The income of the city's 100 largest law firms has tripled to over $20 billion in the past decade.

One third of all the UK's practising solicitors are employed by companies based in London. 60% of large solicitor's firms are in London.

There are 150 courts in London including magistrates courts, county courts, High Courts, the Court of Appeals and the judicial division of the House of Lords.

London is home to one of the world's largest concentrations of national and international news outlets. The Foreign Press Association is one of the oldest clubs for foreign correspondents in the world.

The Royal Geographical Society, founded in 1830, is one of the largest in the world and supports research, education and training through a programme of renowned lectures.

London is home to the world’s largest PR agencies; seven of the top ten agencies worldwide have their corporate headquarters in London, raising revenues in excess of $3.5 billion.

London is home to bodies that regulate and control the legal profession such as the Law Society, The Inns of Court and the General Council of the Bar.

The London Library, founded in 1841, contains over a million books in all European languages. Subjects strengths range across the humanities, with an emphasis on literature and history.

The British Academy, established in 1902, is the national academy for the humanities and social sciences. The Academy holds a number of lectures each year, all of which are open to students.

The Women's Library houses an extensive collection of women's history. The archive includes over 60,000 books and pamphlets, including first editions and rare items.

The Marx Memorial Library has a history of being a centre for radical movements. It holds special collections of political history, philosophy, fiction and biographies.

Media companies based in London include BSkyB, BBC, ITV, CNN, MTV, Reuters, Associated Press, Disney, News International, Time Warner and Virgin.
