Why Institute of Cancer Research?

Ranked as the UK's leading academic research centre, the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) has an outstanding record of achievement dating back more than 100 years.

The Institute leads the world at isolating cancer-related genes and discovering new targeted drugs for personalised cancer treatment. Its key aim is to educate and train the next generation of cancer researchers and clinicians.

The Institute is the most effective university institution in the UK in terms of the impact of its published work in biomedical sciences and ICR research-degree students work alongside leaders in the field.

Thanks to its partnership with The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, the ICR offers an ideal environment for clinical trainees to gain “bedside” experience within oncology.

International Students

ICR has a diverse population, with students from 48 countries around the world.

The research centre provides postgraduate higher education of international distinction. As a college of the prestigious University of London, you will be awarded a globally-recognised University of London degree.

Clinical trainees wishing to gain research experience will find ICR's MD(Res) degree and laboratory-based PhD programmes are an excellent way to make a substantial contribution to scientific understanding.

Previous students enjoy successful careers across the globe and many of them are world leaders in their discipline.

The ICR is able to fund a small number of three-year clinical training fellowships.

An Employee Support programme provides counselling services to students who need it. There's also a network of Student Confidants: current students who have volunteered to give their time to help others who want to talk about issues that affect them.

What Students Say:

"One of my main reasons for applying was that the ICR is a world-class academic research centre, offering supreme opportunities to build a rewarding career and to work with some of the brightest people in research. Additionally, I wanted to work in a place where I could do translational research and the ICR is one of the few places that gives you that opportunity thanks to its relationship with The Royal Marsden."
