English requirements to study in London

The level of English international students will require varies depending on the course you choose.

Current English language requirements*

Foundation degree, undergraduate and postgraduate courses

Most universities accept either IELTS (International English Language Testing System) and TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language).

There are also a number of other English language test providers so you should always check with your chosen university which qualifications they accept.

The UK Border Agency has an official list of the different English language tests available to you and gives you guidance about the levels of English you need before you can study in London.

Many universities offer English courses if you need to improve your English language skills. You can also find accredited English Language courses at the English UK London website.

Short courses or courses below foundation degree level

You will be required to demonstrate your English language ability by passing an approved secure test. This also applies if you are coming to study English language although there may be exceptions for pre-sessional students.

*UPDATE: From April 2012, the level of English you require is changing. International students coming to study at degree level will need to speak English at an 'upper intermediate' (B2) level, rather than the current 'lower intermediate' (B1) requirement. Please refer to the UKBA website for more information.

Visit the UK Border Agency website or contact your chosen university for more information.
