Students from Imperial College London have won the prestigious IEEE Student Humanitarian Supreme Prize for bringing electricity to communities in rural Rwanda.

The electrical engineering students (pictured) won $10,000 for their e.quinox project, which uses solar power to charge portable batteries.

The eighteen month project included the building of a central kiosk that rents fully charged batteries to local people. Electricity in rural Rwandan communities is vital and is used for lighting, radios, mobile phones and keeping medicines refrigerated.

Rental fees collected from the project are used to maintain the kiosk and provide a salary to local people employed on the project.
