Beetroot research

The nitrate content of beetroot juice is the underlying cause of its blood pressure lowering benefits according to researchers at Queen Mary, University of London.

The study, lead by Professor Amrita Ahluwalia (pictured), found that blood pressure was lowered within 24 hours if people drank beetroot juice or took nitrate tablets.

Only a small amount of juice is needed, just 250ml. It was also revealed that the juice has a particularly a strong impact on lowering very high blood pressure.

The research is welcome news to people with high blood pressure who can now adopt a new ‘natural’ approach to help reduce their risk of stroke and heart attacks.
