Course Introduction

The foundation year is designed to help you progress to a challenging and exciting career in economics and finance. Our carefully designed curriculum is particularly suitable for those who want to change direction, perhaps not having taken A'levels in mathematics or economics, and for mature applicants returning to study. You will quickly find that willingness to learn and determination is more important than prior knowledge.

The foundation year is hosted by the Department of Mathematics, to reflect the essential role of mathematics in your subsequent studies. Once you have successfully completed your foundation year with the grades needed for your chosen degree course in the Economics & Finance Department, you progress directly into Level 1 of that degree.

Course Modules

The foundation year covers material that would usually have been covered in A'level mathematics and economics, so that students are well equipped to begin BSc degrees in economics and finance. All students will take the following modules: Introduction to Economics Algebra Statistics Calculus Discrete & Decision Mathematics Study Skills The four mathematics modules will all feature the application of mathematics to economics and finance.
