Course Introduction

This programme runs within the department of Creative Professions & Digital Arts; it is for people who would like careers in film, studio & location camera work, editing/post production, technical production, video compositing, visual effects and motion graphic design.

Focusing on developing technical production skills and programme making for the film, television and digital media industries, this degree aims to develop technological and scientific expertise in filmmaking, sound, camera operation, lighting, editing, post'production, digital compositing and visual effects. Filmmaking processes and production are core to the programme.

You will gain a broad knowledge of production and post'production. Building your skillset in preparation for specialising in your final year by taking on a significant production/crew role within your graduate film. You will have the opportunity to investigate and acquire the latest techniques and study new and emerging technologies in film production and post'production that are valued by employers. On graduation you will have acquired the creative, technical and entrepreneurial skills to launch your career in the film world.

Course Modules

**Year 1**

In year 1, students undertake four core courses to learn technical and creative skills; you will be introduced to the fundamentals of filmmaking and television production and develop an understanding of how the industry works. You will produce a range of films across genres, making drama, documentary and TV studio productions that showcase content and technical knowledge and application. Through practical sessions and hands'on experience, you will apply scientific theory to practical production and build your competency in a range of areas, including camera operation, sound, lighting and post'production.

* Introduction to TV Studio Production

**Year 2**

Year 2 furthers a deeper knowledge of professional filmmaking & fosters multi'skilled creative, technical, intellectual & entrepreneurial filmmakers, who can apply a scientific understanding of film technologies to practice. Students study 2 core courses plus one optional choice. Students acquire more advanced camera, sound, lighting and post'production skills and problem solve and innovate to derive technical solutions to creative challenges. Work experience is embedded into the curriculum as is learning professional industry techniques to enable students to develop a career plan in preparation for graduation.

You may also undertake an industrial placement as an optional sandwich year. A placement will give you practical experience relevant to your degree programme whereby you work on real'life scenarios and witness the end results. It will also consolidate and expand on your first two years of study.

**Year 3**

Year 3 further advances your filmmaking knowledge and independence, preparing you for industry or further academic study. You will explore future technological challenges and debates, including workflow trends, role development and new production models. You will be able to demonstrate an understanding of contemporary and emerging technological developments and how these affect the practical realisation of creative film projects. You will create an ambitious group graduate film to showcase your technical and creative talents by choosing a key craft/production role to specialise in, in order to hone your skills to a high level. The film can be used as a calling card to industry, offering you an advantage in the workplace.
