Course Introduction

This course is designed for advanced composers and provides an in'depth, specialist training for individuals wishing to move into composing for film and television. Students hone their particular skills, study techniques of instrumentation, orchestration and arrange for different genres and styles, developing the flexibility to operate effectively and professionally within this field.

This course is not suitable for guitar'based singer'songwriters, for composers with no previous orchestral experience or for those whose primary experience is not notation'based.

Qualifications required:

  • Applicants must hold a 1st degree in music (specialising in composition), or a 1st degree in another subject plus substantial and relevant prior experience within appropriate areas of composition; applicants must provide a portfolio of original works (including film and television work), scores and recordings as appropriate (in all cases scores are essential, recordings desirable but not indispensable); applicants may be invited to interview; applicants whose 1st language is not English require either IELTS 6.5 or above including a minimum 5.5 for each of the 4 individual components, TOEFL internet-based test 90 or above, Pearson PTE Academic 58 or above, or an equivalent secure English language test.
