Course Introduction

If your ambition is to work with children under the age of eight with a particular focus on additional needs, this fascinating combined course is ideal for you.

You will learn about the development, needs and experiences of young children, including those with special educational needs.

You will investigate the circumstances and procedures through which children are defined, diagnosed and labelled as having special education needs. We will help you to consider how to remove the barriers that prevent children from participating fully with their peers in their early years.

Early childhood is a well'established and popular area of study, while special education at UEL attracts students from all over the country. They are drawn to Newham’s position at the forefront of delivering Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) teaching within mainstream schools, in line with government policy.

As well opening up a range of teaching options, this degree could help you make a move into social work or youth work. Or you may decide to train further to become a paediatric nurse or an educational psychologist.

Our Early Childhood and Special Education course is available online, which makes it easy to fit around parenting or work. You’ll study using the virtual learning environment, Moodle, which includes chatrooms, reading materials, lecture clips and assignments.
