This fascinating and highly practical Crime Scene and Forensic Investigation (Top'up) BSc course is designed to contribute towards a future career as a Scene of Crime Officer (SOCO), Police Officer or Forensic Practitioner. Delivered in collaboration with the City and Islington College Centre for Applied Sciences, this Top'Up qualification builds upon established skills in crime scene examination and forensic analysis, obtained in previous FdSc or similar qualifications. The course enables attainment of the completed skill set that employers are looking for, as well as a qualification recognised by industry leaders.

The duration of this top'up course is 1 year. Entry point for this course is the third year of the standard Crime Scene and Forensic Investigation degree.

The aim of the Crime Scene and Forensic Investigation course is to prepare you to enter employment within the field of crime scene investigation and forensic analysis. Upon graduation from the course, you'll develop the skills required to work in areas such as crime scene examination, customs and excise, and forensic analysis.

You'll develop your practical knowledge and crime scene skills through work'based scenarios, mock crime scenes, laboratory investigations and theoretical study based on multiple modules providing a wide range of subjects.

With topics covering forensic identification, toxicology, pathology and anthropology, the course is tailored to provide you with the knowledge, skills and experience to pursue a variety of careers in crime scene analysis and enable you to succeed.

The course includes practical laboratory sessions as well as the opportunity to participate in role'play scenarios where you will be involved in the obtainment of forensic evidence and its presentation in a mock court. Replica crime scenes will also enable you to gain practical experience obtaining forensic evidence from a range of scenarios, including household theft, fire settings and murder.

Taught by former police and forensic science officers with many years’ experience, you will high standards expected by employers, in accordance with the skills framework outlined by National Occupational Standards (NOS). You will also gain real'world insights through guest lectures from industry experts.
