Birkbeck is different: classes are in the evening, so you can work, study, volunteer, intern or do your own thing during the day. We know the 'standard' university model isn't right for everyone, so our unique evening teaching gives people who care about their future the opportunity to study at one of the world's top research'intensive universities and move forward with their life goals at the same time. We've been helping people access higher education and get back into studying for nearly 200 years, so you'll find a famously friendly and supportive learning environment.
The BA Arts and Humanities with Foundation Year allows you to pursue your interests across the arts and humanities, choosing to study film and media, English and humanities, history of art, or a language and its associated culture, separately or in interdisciplinary combinations. You design your own programme of study, with expert guidance from our academic experts, choosing from an extensive range of option modules.
This programme will build your confidence and give you the core knowledge and key skills you need to succeed at university. You will also get a taste of the subject area you are interested in and deepen your understanding of the career potential of your chosen subject.
Upon successful completion of the one'year Foundation Year, you will automatically progress on to our three'year, full'time evening study BA Arts and Humanities, or you can choose from nearly 30 degree programmes within the School of Arts and the School of Social Sciences, History and Philosophy. You need only complete one application and you enrol onto one programme.
+ Our Foundation Year programmes will fully prepare you for undergraduate study and are ideal if you are returning to study after a gap, or if you have not previously studied the relevant subjects, or if you didn't achieve the grades you need for a place on your chosen undergraduate degree.
+ Arts and humanities courses at Birkbeck are ranked third best in London and 13th in the UK in the Times Higher Education 2016'17 World University Subject Rankings.
+ Our Department of English and Humanities is a top'rated research department. We offer an invigorating, innovative and creative educational experience, built on our international reputation for leading'edge research.
+ You could be studying in a building that was once home to Virginia Woolf and frequented by members of the Bloomsbury Group ' now home to our School of Arts ' and be taught by leading novelists, dramatists and artists.
+ Based at the heart of one of the world's most exciting cities, we combine lectures, seminars and workshops with visits to theatres and other cultural and artistic institutions, and we frequently collaborate with leading arts, cultural, theatre and dance and performing arts organisations, allowing you to ground your studies in real'world practice.
For the Foundation Year, you undertake 2 compulsory modules and choose 2 option modules, all at Level 4 and worth 30 credits each, to a total of 120 credits. If you successfully complete these modules, you will automatically advance on to the 3'year full'time undergraduate degree.
