Course Introduction

This course enables students to achieve a level of linguistic competence in Chinese in all 4 skill areas (reading; writing; listening; and speaking), and demonstrate a good or high degree of proficiency in mediating between Chinese and English.

Course Modules

First year core modules cover the Chinese world and the word, language and culture, and introduction to linguistics; you will choose an option module from intercultural communication, objects and meaning, introduction to language and literature, language myths, or a Westminster elective from across the University.The core modules in the second year are expressions of Chinese culture, and form and meaning; you will then choose two modules from a wide range of subjects including e'collaboration, culture and conflict, screening memory, literary linguistics, child language acquisition, language teaching, a work placement module, or a Westminster elective. In your final year, alongside your dissertation and a core module on themes in Chinese studies, you will choose four options from a wide range of subjects including people and things, gender matters, happiness, politics and literature, language contact and change, language and power or studies in literary language.
