Course Introduction

This is an exciting time to be involved in construction. Construction is critical to our wellbeing, the legacy the built environment leaves is crucial and industry needs young professionals with a variety of skills to ensure buildings are safe, aesthetically pleasing and long lasting.

The modern Construction Manager is required to plan, resource, schedule and co'ordinate a mixture of tasks and interfaces, and communication skills are key throughout the process.

**What will I learn?**

In Year 1 you will develop foundation skills in construction, building services and sustainability, health and safety and practical surveying. We will teach you the digital software skills that will enable you to communicate your understanding graphically.

Year 2 will focus on the principles of contract administration and construction law, engineering principles, current software and construction techniques.

Year 3 is based upon the management of the construction process and the application of risk. Critical thinking will be challenged. A dissertation will be undertaken in the final year.

The department is based in Maritime Greenwich, a world heritage site.The location of the campus is perfect for visits to London based galleries, museums and important buildings – many part of the University itself. Not only is Greenwich a serene and magnificent place to study, it's also close to Canary Wharf and the city – making this an ideal location for work experience. It is equipped with 14 rooftop landscapes, cutting edge digital workshops, extensive design studios, a world'class library and two gallery spaces. Stockwell Street is just a two minute walk from the Greenwich Campus – itself an architectural masterpiece within a world heritage site.

This programme of study is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Building and experience gained further to graduation will facilitate the acquisition of chartered membership and designation as a Chartered Construction Manager or Chartered Builder.

**How will I learn?**

You will learn primarily through taught courses, based around material provided in lectures – which you will supplement through accessing our vast array of publications in our library. The skills you learn during lectures and self'study will be applied in practical, interactive work'shops.

**What opportunities are there to study abroad?**

The Erasmus Programme is a European Union (EU) student exchange programme available for students and provides a grant towards the cost of studying aboard. We have a dedicated placement team who will support students in finding work placements and internships as well as giving students practical advice on writing CVs and preparing for interviews and assessment centres. Students will also have the option of working with other Greenwich students on real world applications for clients as part of our GWizards project (Google for "GWizards" for more details).
