Course Introduction

This new programme integrates the clinical, academic and research components of neurophysiotherapy practice, with an emphasis on the management of patients with neurological disorders. The programme fosters understanding of evidence'based practice and encourages physiotherapists to develop as advanced practitioners. Students select from a wide range of modules according to their interest and complete at least one clinical placement.

Course Modules

Core modules: Clinical education in physiotherapy; evidence'informed neurophysiotherapy practice; motor control and pathophysiology of neurological disorders; physiotherapy research and dissemination; research methods and statistics. Options: cardiorespiratory physiotherapy skills; cardiorespiratory therapy for physiotherapists; cellular and molecular mechanisms of disease; child development: inclusive approaches in global contexts; clinical knowledge and decision'marking; disability and development; epilepsy, pain, tumours and infections of the CNS; health management and clinical exercise for pulmonary disease; higher functions of the brain; information law and governance in clinical practice; motor neurons, neuromuscular junctions and associated diseases; motor systems and disease; muscle and exercise physiology in health and disease; neurorehabilitation; paediatric cardiorespiratory physiotherapy; patient safety and clinical risk; physical activity and clinical exercise for cardiovascular disease; respiration through life, health and disease; skeletal muscle and associated diseases.

Course Additional Entry

Normally a minimum of an upper 2nd Class UK Bachelor's degree or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard in physiotherapy; or an approved diploma in physiotherapy together with evidence of appropriate clinical work and/or teaching experience and a commitment to continuing professional development. At least two years' post'qualification neurological clinical experience is preferred and UK state registration is desirable.
