Course Introduction

This design'based course, open to architects and designers, gives students a strong platform from which to develop their own MA thesis. This course builds on the established strengths of The Cass in the 2 major disciplines, their common interest in spatial design and a critical theoretical framework. It is open to architects and interior designers and is taught in parallel with the Professional Diploma in Architecture. The course offers a rare opportunity for high'level joint study. The different elements are coherent and testing. The course is design'based and research'orientated. It enables students to focus their skills and develop excellence in their work. The coursework provides a strong design platform from which students can develop their thesis creatively and intellectually. The main subject areas are in design, history and theory, each taught through a wide choice of tutors, studios and interest groups with a strong emphasis on self'directed study.

Course Modules

Modules include: Design (research); design (concept and proposition); design dissertation or history and theory dissertation. Optional modules include: Histories; theories; interpretation; concepts of space; poetry and architecture; forgetting of air; cinema and the city; the soundscape of modernity; digital design techniques; energy, comfort and buildings. Students may choose to submit a written or a design dissertation as their major project.

Course Additional Entry

A good Honours degree in architecture, interior design or a closely related subject. The personal statement in the application form should articulate the applicant's academic and professional interests and ambition. Applicants are required to demonstrate design talent, ability and motivation through presentation of a portfolio. All applicants must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the English language.
