London Metropolitan University

Course Introduction

The course emphasises teaching mathematics from 11'16 years with opportunities to develop A'Level teaching. It draws on current debates in mathematics and aims to develop classroom practices that are engaging and contribute to the raising of standards and participation in mathematics. Course contributors are drawn from across the spectrum and alumni, who are now working in schools, to develop a course in which students regularly gain work as teaches across London. This course will lead to a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with Qualified Teacher Status whether you apply to London Met for PGCE or through the PGCE School Direct at London Met application process. Please see the How to Apply section for the UCAS Provider details of our partner schools.

Course Modules

It focuses on the developing a repertoire of interactive teaching styles including ICT and group work. Students consider all aspects of the maths curriculum before starting school placements and start with a comprehensive set of teaching resources. This is supplemented by a range of distance learning platforms which mean they are well supported when in schools. The course structure provides for increasing amounts of school'based work with a gradual progression to whole'class teaching, with responsibility for management and assessment of pupils increasing accordingly. During the year, attendees will have 2 substantial periods of school experience in different secondary schools. They will also spend 2 days in a primary school, which attendees must arrange themselves. University'based work involves a variety of learning activities. Lectures and workshops provide formal opportunities to extend subject knowledge and explore the principles of effective teaching. Workshops will provide opportunities to reflect on and discuss experiences in school, and to learn from one another.
