Course Introduction

The course is designed for students to: identify and debate key issues in contemporary painting; to contribute to a collaborative public event and online archive on the subject of contemporary painting; to extend a knowledge of paint as a material and process; to examine the ways in which methods and materials shape the agenda in contemporary painting whilst creating a critical relationship to tradition; to explore the range of models of practice for the contemporary painter; to examine the notion of painting as research; to develop a key questions and ideas from an initial period of review and experimentation; to be part of a challenging learning and teaching environment that supports the development of a practical, professional and research skills; to engage with the wider research culture at the university.

Course Additional Entry

Honours degree or equivalent academic qualifications; study proposal; portfolio of work; details of 2 referees; alternative qualifications and experience will also be taken into consideration; IELTS level 6.5 or above if English is not an applicant's 1st language, with at least 5.5 in reading, writing, listening and speaking (please check our English language requirements).
