Course Introduction

The role of the funeral director is fundamentally important in providing a service relating to a difficult and sensitive time in people's lives. Effective practice in this role demands a high level of both technical and interpersonal skills. The aim of this programme, which has been jointly designed by the British Institute of Funeral Directors (BIFD) and Birkbeck, is to help funeral directors meet the demands of their role in an appropriately professional manner. The core content of this programme is provided by the BIFD Diploma in Funeral Service, which you have to pass to join this Certificate of Higher Education. The content of the diploma is then enhanced through the 4 modules which you take at Birkbeck. The content of these modules is specifically designed to develop management practice, and you are able to choose from a menu of topics which includes: Managing change; leadership and team building; the marketing challenge; making financial decisions; personal effectiveness; strategy and business planning; people management and diversity; mathematics for business.
