Course Introduction

This course enables you to pursue your Japanese language studies while exploring Japan's modern history and contemporary culture and society. It is aimed at beginners and is a perfect way to start your study of the culture, history and language of this fascinating and important East Asian country. If you require knowledge and experience of Japanese for work purposes, or would like a taste of what the study of Japan has to offer, this programme will help you meet your learning goals and needs.

Course Modules

The course consists of 4 modules: 2 in Japanese language and 2 in Japanese society and culture. Depending on your level, you may start as a pure beginner or intermediate. You take a Japanese language class in year 1 and year 2. Year 1: Rethinking Japan (introduction to modern Japanese society and culture). Year 2: Either popular culture in Japan and East Asia; or theorising Japanese cinema.
