This programme will give you an advanced knowledge of a range of geochemical disciplines, from Earth surface chemistry and pollution to resource geochemistry and magmatic processes. It provides high'level professional and academic training in geochemical theory, knowledge and practice, as well as field and laboratory methodologies, so that you are prepared for further study in geochemistry, or for a career in a range of areas, including environmental science, sustainability, industry, government and other organisations. As well as attending this course at Birkbeck in central London, you can also study by distance learning via our online learning environment. You can access course materials and recordings of lectures wherever you are in the world ' and whenever it suits you. A training week in central London in field and laboratory methods of geochemistry is included.
Year 1: advanced chemistry and pollution of water, soil and air; advanced earth's resources and raw materials; advanced environmental isotopes; field and laboratory techniques in geochemistry 1; field and laboratory techniques in geochemistry 2. Year 2: advanced magmatic processes; MSc geochemistry research project and thesis. If you are interested in further research, we offer an MPhil/PhD in geology.
Course Additional Entry
Minimum 2.2 honours degree in an earth/environmental science or similar subject. We welcome graduates from the earth sciences, geology, geography, chemistry and biology. Relevant work'related experience will also be considered. If English is not your first language or you have not previously studied in English, our usual requirement is the equivalent of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic Test) score of 6.5, with not less than 6.0 in each of the sub'tests.
