Course Introduction

This is a research'oriented programme designed for students looking for a concentrated, advanced course in theoretical syntax, couched broadly within the Principles and Parameters approach to syntax and its offshoot, the Minimalist Program.

Course Modules

Obligatory core modules: Current issues in syntax; dissertation in linguistics; intermediate generative grammar A and B; readings in syntax. Non'obligatory core modules: Advanced phonological theory A and B; advanced semantic theory A and B. Optional modules: Animal communication and human language; computational methods for speech and hearing science; development of speech perception and production; experimental phonetics; issues in pragmatics; language acquisition; neurolinguistics; philosophy of language; pragmatic theory; 2nd language speech learning; semantic'pragmatic development; sociolinguistics; stuttering; the linguistics of sign languages; any statistical training outside the department.

Course Additional Entry

Normally a minimum of an upper 2nd Class Honours degree from a UK university or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard is required.
