University of Roehampton

Course Introduction

This course aims to address the growing demand for translators with skills in translating technical texts, and familiarises you with the sociocultural, linguistic and technical dimensions that characterise specialised, multilingual material. Through working with dedicated software and high'tech, industry standard equipment, you will learn the necessary skills to enter the professional market and the knowledge to pursue further research in this field. There is particular emphasis on learning translation tools (in particular SDL Trados) and on localisation, for both for software and videogames.

Course Additional Entry

The programme is not limited to specific language pairs ' students work into and out of English and another language of their choice or monolingually in English. French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese and Spanish are provided every year. Depending on the number of students, other language combinations may also be offered, notably Arabic, Polish, Portuguese and Russian. The decision to run any particular language combination will be at the discretion of the Programme Convener in consultation with the Head of Department. Entry to the programmes is open to applicants with a good first degree in a relevant topic area (linguistics, modern languages, economics, law, film etc.). All candidates will need to demonstrate excellent writing and communication skills in English. We particularly welcome students who have done a degree in Translation. Non'native speakers of English should normally have at least 6.5 IELTS. The Programme Convener reserves the right to interview any of the candidates under this category. The programmes are also open to candidates with an appropriate professional qualification or with proven professional expertise in the field of translation. All candidates under this category will be interviewed by the Programme Convener. All applicants will be required to supply the names of two referees that will be able to comment on the applicant's academic suitability and knowledge of English where appropriate.
