Course Introduction

A degree in Economics can lead into many career areas. Although many graduates go on to work in the finance sector including banking, accountancy, tax advice and insurance and trading, other roles that Economics graduates regularly go into include management; marketing, sales and advertising; human resources; IT and education making this degree very attractive to students who like the idea of being able to branch off into alternative areas.

Course Modules

Year 1: Semester 1: business environment; business systems: an introductory management perspective; introduction to marketing; business communication. Semester 2: introduction to macroeconomics; quantitative literacy 1; historical and institutional economics. Year 2: Semester 1: quantitative methods for economics; intermediate macroeconomics; business skills. Semester 2: environmental economics and sustainability; intermediate microeconomics; introduction to econometrics. Year 3: Semester 1: multinational firms and global trade; introduction to advanced microeconomics; introduction to advanced macroeconomics. Plus one optional module from: economics of the European Union; applied econometrics; the political economy of China; employment and labour markets. Semester 2: introduction to advanced microeconomics; economics project. Plus one optional module from: contemporary issues facing the UK and world economy; financial econometrics; the business environment of Asia'pacific.
