This course is designed for students from a range of business backgrounds looking to move into the finance industry. Students are provided with a thorough grounding in the theory of finance. Built on this solid technical foundation is an understanding of the practical elements of the finance and accounting industries which include advanced techniques in corporate financial strategy and project management, and company valuation. On this programme, students gain an understanding of both the financial basics and a practical and specialist knowledge through electives and project work.
Pre'study online modules: accounting primer; career and professional development; introduction to finance; introduction to maths; plagiarism awareness; study skills. Foundation modules: accounting and valuation; application of MATLAB to finance; financial modelling; markets and securities; the finance industry. Core modules: advanced corporate finance; advanced financial accounting; corporate finance; corporate strategy; derivatives; financial econometrics; investment and portfolio management; management accounting; ethics and professional standards in finance (online module). Elective modules: advanced financial statistics; corporate law and corporate tax strategy; corporate strategy and dynamic competition; enterprise risk management; financial crises (regulation and ethics); international elective (macro and finance for practitioners); international finance; insurance; mergers and acquisitions; private equity and entrepreneurial finance; structured credit and equity products; venture capital finance and innovation.
Course Additional Entry
At least a 2.1 degree (or international equivalent) in a highly quantitative discipline such as finance, accounting, economics, mathematics, engineering, science or business. All applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency by meeting one of the following standards: grade B in GCSE 'O' Level English or equivalent; grade B in Cambridge CPE; minimum score of 7.0 in IELTS; minimum overall score of 100 in TOEFL; grade 5 in IB English; successful completion of the Business School's pre'sessional English course.
