This LCF course is for students who want to be innovative textile designers for the fashion industry, and focuses on creative approaches to contemporary fashion knit textiles. You will investigate and experiment with knit construction, producing textile samples and/or knitwear for the contemporary fashion market. You will use domestic and industrial knitting machines and digital knit technology, and you will learn about related textile processes that will extend your creative design potential. Industry'facing projects and creative collaborations with pattern cutting, menswear and womenswear students are features of the course, and you will design for international markets from high street to couture. A short work placement will give you valuable experience of working in a textile company and making useful contacts for your future career, and you may enter national competitions. You will be based in Lime Grove in Shepherd's Bush, just west of Holland Park and Notting Hill.
Year 1: Introduction to study in higher education (fashion textiles); design and technical process; introduction to cultural and historical studies; creative context; introduction to industry practice. Year 2: Cultural and historical studies; future craft; research methods; designer identity; work experience and professional studies. Year 3: Design synthesis; contextualising your practice; final major project.
