Course Introduction

Psychologists attempt to understand the processes which underpin our thoughts, actions and motivation. Although complex, there are many aspects of human thought and behaviour that can be observed and measured. In doing so, psychology helps us answer questions like: how do we change as we grow older? Is our behaviour influenced by our genes, our environment, or both? How do our brains work? How are mental health problems diagnosed and treated? Addiction psychology is a fascinating specialist area of psychology focused on both substance dependence and other forms of behavioural dependence such as gambling. Topics include theories of addiction, understanding the development, maintenance, and recovery from addiction, treatment and harm minimisation approaches for addictive behaviours, and prevention strategies.
