Course Introduction

This course enables students to develop a theoretical framework within which they can analyse educational issues and, where appropriate, develop their own professional practice; it offers students the chance to plan an individual course of study by selecting particular modules within the programme or by taking modules that may lead to a named award; the course is designed for people working in education in all sectors and others with an interest in education. The programme of study provides an introduction to higher study and to the intellectual and academic discourses associated with education as a core university discipline. It is closely linked to the actuality and educational challenges associated with the meshing of local and global in London as a world city; in consequence there is a vital and critical engagement with professional practices and with the empirical realities that attend and shape them.

Course Modules

Core modules: Curriculum, pedagogy and assessment; critical theory and education; research methods in education. Optional modules: Specialist study module; bilingualism and education (the classroom and school context); children's literature in education; educational approaches to inclusion and social justice; applying learning technologies; web'based learning and teaching; fundamentals of leadership and management.

Course Additional Entry

Applicants must have a good degree in education or social science; GCSE English. All applicants must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the English language. Applicants who require a Tier 4 student visa may need to provide a Secure English Language Test (SELT) such as Academic IELTS.
